Setting up your Afterpay account
Setting up an Afterpay account takes a few minutes. Download the Afterpay app or visit the Afterpay web portal to apply. You can also apply during checkout at participating retailers.
Applying for Pay in 4
To apply, you'll need to:
Be living in Australia
Be at least 18 years old
Have a valid, verifiable email address and phone number
Have an Australian bank-issued debit or credit card
Be capable of entering into a legally binding contract
Have a valid, verifiable ID
Agree to our Privacy Policy and Customer Terms
We'll assess your eligibility — including information about your income and expenses, and information in your credit report. A Pay in 4 assessment is a soft check and won't affect your credit score.
Once approved, choose Afterpay as your payment method at checkout.
Applying for Pay Monthly
Pay Monthly is Afterpay's longer-term credit product — monthly payments over 6, 12, or 24 months, with interest. It's available at selected retailers. To apply for Pay Monthly, you must already have an Afterpay account in good standing.
If you're new to Afterpay, you'll complete both applications in one flow at checkout:
Apply for an Afterpay account (Pay in 4) — using the eligibility criteria above.
Apply for Pay Monthly — an additional assessment including income, expenses, and a credit check through Experian.
If you already have a Pay in 4 account, you'll only need to complete the Pay Monthly application.
Pay Monthly eligibility
To apply for Pay Monthly, you'll need to:
Be an Australian resident aged 18 or over
Be earning a regular income
Already have an Afterpay account
Link a debit card (credit cards are not accepted for Pay Monthly)
We'll assess your income, expenses, and financial commitments, and carry out a credit check through Experian. This is a hard check, which is visible to other lenders and may affect your credit score.
If your Pay Monthly application is not approved, we'll let you know. Your Pay in 4 account is not affected.
What happens if my application is not successful?
If your application for Pay in 4 is not approved, you can try again with a future purchase. Pay in 4 eligibility is assessed each time you check out, so a declined order doesn't prevent you from being approved next time.
If your application for Pay Monthly is not approved, you may be able to apply again — for example, if your information was incorrect or your financial situation changes.
For both products, we consider several factors when assessing your application — including information you've provided, your payment history with Afterpay, and information in your credit report.
